ESL/Bilingual Endorsement or Dual Credit Certification

Southern Illinois teachers holding an Illinois Professional Educators License earn your ESL/Bilingual Endorsement or Dual Credit Certification in Summer 2017 through Spring 2018 at SIU.

Before Southern Illinois University was a university, it was a teaching college, and this program is inline with SIU's first mission. The ESL/Bilingual Endorsement or Dual Credit Certification program has two parts, one to provide more qualification opportunities for teachers to become dual credit-qualified, and one addressing the need for more bilingual and ESL (English as a Second Language) instructors. In addition, enrollment during Summer 2017 for qualitifed courses within the program offers tuition and fees assistance for school teachers interested in obtaining these credentials.

Making it easy for our teachers to go for more, the Fall and Spring semester courses will be offered in the evening to accommodate high school teachers’ schedules. The math program has an online component for those who can’t easily make it to campus, and other programs may offer online courses in the future.

DUAL CREDIT CERTIFICATION

Dual credit courses typically represent college freshman or sophomore level courses that fulfill core curriculum, or general education, requirements. Now, through this program, high school teachers in the southern Illinois region will be able to come to SIU and take the graduate courses that lead to dual credit teaching certification. Then they can offer these courses to students ready for dual credit, giving students the option of taking dual-credit classes in their high schools.

Dual Credit Certification requires teachers to have a Master’s degree (does not have to be in the discipline) plus 18 graduate hours in the discipline in which they are seeking certification.
