Dr. Algeania Freeman
Congratulations to Dr. Algeania Freeman for her new position as President of Wilberforce University! Dr. Freeman obtained her Master of Science degree from SIU in 1972. Dr. Freeman carries an extensive list of accolades, including the prestigious Harlem Renaissance Award for Outstanding HBCU President, Teacher of the Year at Norfolk State University, and an Outstanding Graduate Award Citation from the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. As a national finalist for the White House Fellows program, she has raised more than $40 million in grants and external funding. Dr. Freeman has over 40 years of experience as an administrator and educator, and now serves as President of the oldest predominantly African-American private university of the nation. Congrats again to Dr. Freeman and best wishes in her new position!
Dr. Beryl McEwen
Congratulations for Dr. Beryl McEwen for being named new Dean of the School of Business and Economics at North Carolina Agricultural University in Greensboro! For the past two years, McEwen served as the university’s Vice Provost for strategic planning and institutional effectiveness. Prior to her position as Vice Provost, she was the Associate Dean of the Business School from 2010 to 2012, and the chairwoman of the Business Education Department in 1995. Dr. McEwen graduated from SIU with a PhD in Business Education in 1986.
Congratulations to Bill Wirtanen on his induction into the Mesabi Range College Athletics Hall of Fame! Bill’s achievements and true legacy are the countless lives he has touched throughout his 42 years as an educator. He earned his master’s degree from SIU in 1957, and since then, has been the recipient of numerous honors including his induction into the NJCAA Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Minnesota Community College Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1997. In 2001, the Mesabi Range College dedicated the gymnasium in Bill’s name. Additionally, two $500 scholarships are awarded to students enrolled at Mesabi each year. Bill’s hard work and dedication continues to shine through his long line of coaching, educating and inspiring.
