Our certification programs include:

Master of Arts in Teaching, M.A.T.+ -

(Curriculum and Instruction)

(M.A.T.) Program is intended for persons who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Fine Arts) in the liberal arts or sciences at an NCATE-approved (or otherwise appropriately-accredited) college or university, and desire to pursue licensure for teaching at the secondary level.

Those enrolled engage in a year-long internship in a public school setting while also completing university-based studies culminating in the Master's Degree and Illinois teacher certification for the appropriate grade level(s) and content preparation. More >>

Communication Disorders and Sciences, M.S. + -

(Rehabilitation Institute)

The Communication Disorders and Sciences (CDS) program specializes in the area of speech-language pathology. Speech-language pathologists are professionals educated in the study of human communication, its development, and its disorders. By evaluating the speech language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing skills of children and adults, the speech-language pathologist determines what communication problems exist and the best way to treat them. As a student in the CDS program. you would study normal communication as well as procedures for assessment and intervention of persons with communication disorders. More >>

Graduate Certificate in Gerontology+ -

The Graduate Certificate in Gerontology is open to post-bachelor level students who are interested in the area of gerontology. It is designed to provide knowledge, skills, and specialized training in programs and services for older persons. The certificate includes core courses on aging in the following areas: social work, rehabilitation, health, exercise and education. Courses within the certification program will include, but not be limited to: policy and program issues, psychosocial issues and health and fitness issues. The coursework also includes a practicum in an agency suitable to the individual’s interest. Students must complete 18 semester hours of study including a minimum of three hours of practicum, to earn the certificate.   More >>

(Educational Psychology & Special Education)

The master's degree in counseling is designed to develop students' potential as professional counselors and provide specialization in three distinct areas: (1) community counseling; (2) school counseling; and (3) marital, couple, and family counseling.

All three emphases are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and adequately prepare students for certification and/or initial licensure in their specialty area. School counseling is also approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). In addition, SIUC is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (NCACSS). More >>

(Educational Administration and Higher Education)

Principal Preparation Program prepares individuals to be highly effective in leadership roles to improve teaching and learning and increase academic achievement and the development of all students. Reading and Language Studies, Specialty Area + -

(Curriculum and Instruction)

Students have the opportunity to increase their knowledge about literacy instruction, to grow as classroom teachers and prepare students for more specialized positions as reading teachers and/or reading specialists. We offer two strands in Doctoral programming: literacy education and the TESoL option. Both programs engage doctoral students in courses that advance their knowledge in literacy research, theory, and practice. More >>

Rehabilitation Administration and Services, M.S. + -

(Rehabilitation Institute)

The degree granted by the Rehabilitation Administration and Services program is the Master's of Science degree. The M.S. degree is felt to be most appropriate for individuals who are or plan to become practitioners or administrators within direct service programs. The M.S. degree emphasizes professional applied training, and knowledge and skills required to appropriately utilize and evaluate rehabilitation research. More >>

Rehabilitation Counselor, M.S. + -

(Rehabilitation Institute)

The Rehabilitation Counselor Training Program is to prepare professional Rehabilitation Counselors to work with people with physical, mental, or emotional disability. The goal of the Rehabilitation Counselor is to assist people with disabilities to achieve maximum psychological, social, vocational, economic independence, and quality of life to their fullest capacity. The foundation of Rehabilitation Counseling is one of empowerment in which individuals exercise control over their own lives. Rehabilitation Counseling focuses on the whole person, including physical, psychological and spiritual aspects, as well as family, social and work relationships.

The Rehabilitation Counselor needs advanced skills in interpersonal communications and counseling, assessment procedures, case management, coordination of services, job placement, and understanding of psychosocial and medical aspects of disability. Rehabilitation Counselors also work closely with family members, and confer with a number of other professionals, such as physicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, audiologists, and other health professionals. Social Work, M.S.W./J.D. (concurrent) + -

(School of Social Work)

The program is designed to educate practitioners in law and social work to effectively utilize the problem-solving strategies and techniques of both disciplines. Students prepared in this program will develop an understanding of the ethics, language, research, history, and processes of both professions. Individuals so trained will be uniquely prepared for careers which combine both legal and human service needs such as administration, supervision of the provision of services, public policy leadership roles, family practice, and community planning and development. In addition, strengthening the academic training of lawyers and social workers will enhance the quality of research performed in both disciplines as well as enhance the quality of publications in both fields of study. Finally, students with this concurrent degree will be uniquely prepared to address the myriad of problems in our society which present complex legal and social issues. Students who complete this concurrent program will have enhanced educational and professional opportunities both inside and outside of academia. More >>
