Message to Our Students
Welcome to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Southern Illinois University Carbondale! We are a vibrant department with faculty and staff that are student-focused and research-oriented. I hope you will take the time to explore our department’s website to learn more about our outstanding programs and faculty.
We have a wide variety of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our undergraduate programs in early childhood (including specializations in pre-school/primary and child and family services), elementary education, history education, and biological sciences education are recognized statewide and nationally for preparing outstanding teachers and child and family specialists that serve our region and national communities.
Our graduate programs offer teachers and other professionals the opportunities to further their education. Students have the choice of several areas in which to specialize including curriculum, instruction, & assessment; human development and family studies; early childhood; learning systems design & technology; mathematics education; science education; social science education; language, literacies & culture; and teacher leadership.
Our department and college have always maintained strong partnerships with our regions’ schools and communities. Our Professional Development School Advisory Board is but one example of our local schools and our college working together to improve student achievement and teacher development. In addition, we offer several student organizations, such as Promoting Respect through Inclusiveness and Diversity Excellence (P.R.I.D.E.) that offer leadership opportunities for our students.
Every year we welcome new graduate students into our department from southern Illinois and from all over the world. We invite you to learn more about us and let us know if you have any questions.
