Message to Our Students
Welcome to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Southern Illinois University Carbondale! We are a vibrant department with faculty and staff who are student-focused and guided by research. I hope you will take the time to explore our department’s website to learn more about our outstanding programs and faculty.
We offer undergraduate programs in early childhood (including specializations in preschool/primary and child and family services) and elementary education. Our programs are recognized statewide and nationally for preparing outstanding teachers and child and family specialists who serve our region and national communities.
Our graduate programs offer both master’s and doctoral degrees that focus study in curriculum, instruction, & assessment; learning systems design & technology; mathematics education; science education; STEM education; language, literacies, & culture; social science education; human development & family studies; and teacher leadership.
Our department and college strive to maintain strong partnerships with our region’s schools and communities. We recruit students to volunteer as tutors at the I CAN READ! Program of Southern Illinois. We facilitate community service through several of our courses. In addition, we offer student organizations such as the Elementary Education Student Organization (EESO) and Promoting Respect through Inclusiveness and Diversity Excellence (PRIDE) that provide leadership, professional development, and community service opportunities for our students.
Every year we welcome new students into our department from southern Illinois and from all over the world. We invite you to learn more about us, and let us know if you have any questions.
All the best,
Christina C. McIntyre, Ph.D.
