New program focuses on adolescents, adults with autism - Christi Mathis
A unique new program for high-functioning adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders is coming to the region courtesy of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Club 57, established by the College of Education and Human Services’ Rehabilitation Institute, is free, open to all who fit the criteria, and accepting registrations now.

Children, adults benefit from equine therapy program - Christi Mathis
Would Alex, Katie or Jacob be the first to ride a horse across the arena and throw a couple of balls into the assigned brightly colored buckets? It was an intense but fun competition. Jacob smiled and pumped his fist in jubilation as he won the first round. Undeterred, Alex and Katie tried ever harder to assure their victories in subsequent rounds. Students from Southern Illinois University Carbondale offered encouragement and help.

Clinic helps children find their voices - Christi Mathis
Drake Hazel didn’t respond to his name, even though multiple tests revealed nothing was amiss with his hearing. He didn’t appear to be interested in talking, either, and often seemed to be in his own little world, according to his mother, Sara. At 20 months, the family learned the little tot from Marion is autistic. They discovered Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Language and Cognitive Development Clinic (LCDC) last January and these days, Sara is excited to say they are seeing a different Drake.

Grant aims to change culture on college campus, in community for suicide prevention - Rachael Krause, WPSD Channel 6 News
Every 13 minutes, someone in the U.S. commits suicide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports there were 41,149 suicides in 2015, making it the 10th highest cause of death in the country. Associate professor, program director for social work and principal investigator of the suicide grant Dhrubodhi Mukherjee says SIU needs to change the campus’ culture regarding suicide. With the grant money awarded to his proposal, he’s working to build a program that makes suicide a topic anyone can talk about.

Renzaglia, founder of Two Illinois Industries recognited - Carl Flowers and Micheal Mooney
Guy A. Renzaglia has been unanimously voted to receive the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Illinois Association of Rehabilitation Professionals-Illinois Chapter. The award, to the former Director and Professor of the Rehabilitation Institute of Southern Illinois University (1955-1978) is in recognition of his many contributions made to the field of human services.

Yang Appointed American Therapeutic Recreation Association Program Committee Co-Chair - Zach Martin
Professor Heewon Yang, chair of the Health Education and Recreation Department in the College of Education and Human Services, was appointed as co-chair for the program committee of the 2016 American Therapeutic Recreation Association's annual conference to be held this fall. SIU Interim Provost Susan M. Ford called Yang's appointment "a major accomplishment and testament to [Yang's] hard work and dedication." The ATRA Annual Conference will be held in Chicago from September 10-13.
