Recently, the SIUC administration made two major policy changes that directly effect undergraduate students; namely, to reduce the number of Senior Institution hours required for graduation and to identify certain courses which no longer qualify for Senior Institution credit. Both changes went into effect June 10, 2013. The SIUC Residence requirement was unaffected by the June 10th policy changes of the University.
The Senior Institution requirement was reduced from 60 to 42 semester hours. This change affects all undergraduate students uniformly across the campus and will go unnoticed by students who have spent the majority of their undergraduate years at SIUC or other accredited four-year educational institutions.
However, changes in criteria for awarding Senior Institution credit will impact some students. For example, the majority of OTD students must meet the newly-established criteria for occupational training and work experience to satisfy the 42 semester hour Senior Institution requirement to graduate.
Occupational training can be documented by credit earned at SIUC; transfer credit from other accredited educational institutions; non-transferrable credit awarded for corporate training, military training. apprenticeship training, and so forth, or a combination thereof. Prior to the June 10th date, non-transferrable occupational training from “other than accredited educational institutions” was awarded WED 259 credit.
However, WED 259 no longer satisfies the SIUC Senior Institution requirement. The criteria established for WED 359 must be met before the credit can be awarded. WED 259 remains a viable option for OTD students who can satisfy the 42 semester hour Senior Institution requirement through the completion of other 300/400 level courses.
Like WED 259 Occupational Training, WED 258 Work Experience no longer satisfies the SIUC Senior Institution requirement. To satisfy the Senior Institution requirement by way of work experience, the student must meet the criteria established for WED 358 before credit can be awarded.
WED 258 credit can still be awarded for work experience if the student satisfies the 42 semester hour Senior Institution requirement by successfully completing other senior-level courses at SIUC or other accredited four-year institution(s).
