SIU plans Veterans Day commemoration
Veterans Day The university will publicly commemorate Veterans Day with the annual vigil at the flagpole near the center of campus. This year’s Nov. 11 Veterans Day event marks the 41st anniversary of the flagpole vigil, which began in 1981. The event, organized by SIU’s ROTC programs, honors SIU and Southern Illinois veterans who served their country in the U.S. armed forces.

Backpacks CARBONDALE, Ill. — The lawn of Morris Library at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will look different from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 10 as scores of very special backpacks will be placed across the greenspace. The all-day awareness event, the first of its kind at SIU, is designed to help end the silence surrounding mental health issues and bring awareness to the issue of suicide.

Teacher in classroom CARBONDALE, Ill. — Eight Southern Illinois University Carbondale students are currently working in classrooms throughout the region for the inaugural year of the Saluki Teacher Residency Partnership (STRP), which provides financial, mentorship and experiential benefits to teacher candidates while also helping participating school districts and children. And the program gets the aspiring educators started on their careers several months earlier.

SIU Carbondale enrolls largest freshman class in 6 years
Pep rally CARBONDALE, Ill. — With its largest class of new freshmen in six years, Southern Illinois University Carbondale has enjoyed a second year of stable enrollment, totaling 11,107, just 1.4% lower than 2021. This fall, 1,518 Salukis are starting their college career, an increase of 6.8% over their predecessors. In 2021, the university welcomed 1,422 new students

Festivities start with the SIU School of Law commencement on Friday, May 6, at Shryock Auditorium. On Saturday, May 7, Banterra Center will hold two commencement ceremonies.

SIU Carbondale has changed spring 2022 commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 7. There will now be two, rather than three, commencement ceremonies at Banterra Center that day. Commencement for the SIU School of Law will still be on Friday, May 6, in Shryock Auditorium.

Day of Giving nets over $3.5M
Press conference The SIU Day of Giving reached new heights this year by raising over $3.5 million from more than 2,400 donations in 24 hours. In its sixth year, the 24-hour online fundraiser received more than 2,400 donations and set numerous records. In its six years of existence, the Day of Giving has brought in more than $10 million.

Spring commencement Ceremonies for spring 2022 commencement on May 6-7 are set. There is no ticketing for guests, and guest seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. All of the ceremonies, except for the SIU School of Law ceremony in Shryock Auditorium, will take place in Banterra Center. Ceremonies will be compliant with campus and state pandemic safety protocols in place at the time.
