Ryan Redner is an Assistant Professor in the Behavior Analysis and Therapy program. Ryan received his Doctoral degree from Western Michigan University and went on to complete a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Vermont in the area of Behavior and Health. He studies the personal health choices that lead to premature death and exorbitant health care costs in the United States (mostly cigarette smoking). Current research interests include tobacco regulatory science, the use of incentives to treat cigarette smoking, and the application of behavioral economics in the measurement of nicotine dependence. The same principles that make cigarette smoking reinforcing can be used to promote abstinence by systematically providing small financial incentives to reinforce success in abstaining from smoking. He has also been studying processes that underlie behavioral choice and how they are associated with risk of cigarette smoking using delay discounting and hypothetical purchase tasks. The application of the science of behavior to important behaviors relevant to health can have a major impact on population health. Ryan has co-authored two book chapters and 25 peer-reviewed journal articles on a variety of topics relevant to behavioral economics and tobacco use in vulnerable populations.
